MARIETTA, GA – October 30, 2026 – Imagine being dropped at a remote mountain base camp, with no one nearby to help if something goes wrong. Your driver will not return for two or three weeks, and the nearest mine or customs station may be 35 to 90 miles away. For Bob Villarreal, this was part of the reality of climbing alone in the High Andes.
Villarreal did not begin climbing as a young adventurer. He found his way to the mountains in middle age, after retiring from business, and soon felt drawn back to their stark beauty and demanding challenges. Over the years, he made 30 climbs in the Andes, 19 of them solo, returning well into his sixties.
In Clawing for the Stars: A Solo Climber in the Highest Andes, Villarreal recounts the trips that stayed with him most: journeys into distant mountain country along the border between Chile and Argentina, where the landscape is vast and help can be far away. Alone in these places, he had to depend on his preparation, judgment, and ability to face the unexpected.
But the book is about more than reaching mountain peaks. Villarreal admits that he still cannot fully explain what kept bringing him back. Was it the pull of adventure? The danger? Or the hope that life in the mountains might reveal something deeper? He leaves the questions open, allowing the stories themselves to show readers what he experienced and what may have drawn him onward.
The book gathers short stories from his most memorable climbs, shaped by the people, places, and moments he encountered along the way. For years, Villarreal kept these memories to himself. Then his grandson asked him to write about his adventures. That request became the reason to put the stories on paper and a chance to honor the mountains that, even years later, remain part of his thoughts.
Beyond his personal climbing experiences, Villarreal’s book explores a historical mystery in the Andes: the huts built more than 500 years ago near the summit of Cerro Llullaillaco, a 22,100-foot mountain in Chile. How did the Indigenous people who built them reach such heights and accomplish this feat centuries ago? This question adds a historical dimension to a book otherwise rooted in the risks, challenges, and enduring fascination of high-altitude climbing.
